Roy passed away 8.00 am on Tuesday morning of 3rd July, after a long illness with lengthly stays in hospital and latterly a move to a Care Home. He was 88. Roy was Mr Blackley Cricket Club (apart from a few years sabbatical at Greetland !) Roy was a dour left handed batter and boundaries were at a premium when he was at the crease. A nudge here and a nudge there were his stock-in-trade. He was also an accomplished wicket-keeper, and had a good pair of hands in the slips. When he gave up playing he became an umpire for both the Halifax Cricket League and his beloved Blackley CC. His other great love in cricket was groundsmanship, and he was groundsman at both Blackley and Greetland for many years. Roy was President at Blackley 1966-69 and again from 1992-2011. He was Chairman from 1972-74, 1976-79 and again from 1984-91. From a Halifax League perspective, he was League Chairman from 1971-77, and was later made a Senior League Vice-President. He will also be remembered for introducing and sponsoring the 5 a-side knockout competition for the Roy Chappell Trophy over ‘Wakes’ weeks when there were no League fixtures. All in all a lovely man, friend to many, who loved his cricket and his club – he will be sadly missed by many. Funeral will be at 2.00 pm on Monday 16th July at Provident Church in Elland and then back to Blackley C.C.
